AMERICAN HOLIDAYS.
Let’s start speaking about
American holidays with Independence Day. It is one of the most important
national celebrations in the United
States. It is celebrated on the fourth of
July. On this day the United States
declared their independence from England.
People celebrate the holiday with picnics, parades, fireworks. They take
part in baseball games and watermelon-eating competitions.
Another interesting
holiday is Thanksgiving Day. It was first celebrated in 1621 by English
settlers of the Plymouth
colony. In 1620 they sailed to America
on the "Mayflower” ship and landed at place which is now Plymouth, Massachusetts
in November. When April came they began their planting. When the fields
produced a rich harvest, the Governor proclaimed "Day of Thanksgiving”.
Thanksgiving Day is celebrated on the fourth Thursday of November. On this day
Americans cook the traditional roast turkey.
